Lesson 2 — Slope & Rate of Change

Compute slope from two points, interpret sign and units, and classify lines as positive/negative/zero/undefined.

Definition

The slope between two points (x₁,y₁) and (x₂,y₂) is m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁) (if x₂ ≠ x₁).

positive rises to the right, negative falls to the right, zero is horizontal, undefined is vertical.

Rate of change

Always include units! Example: m = 3 cm/s means y increases 3 cm for every 1 s increase in x.

Mini-Lab — Drag two points

Point A
A = (-2, 1)
Point B
B = (3, 6)
1
Drag points A and B. We’ll compute the slope live.

Try it — Is the statement true?

Question 1 of 5

For A(−2,1) and B(3,6), the slope is 1.
